The Rt Rev Henry Whitehead, DD was an eminent Anglican clergyman in the last decade of the 19th century〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, John Phillips, 1900〕 and the first quarter of the 20th. He was born on 19 December 1863 and educated at Sherborne and Trinity College, Oxford.〔“Who was Who”1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 Ordained in 1879 his first post was as a preacher at St Nicholas, Abingdon.〔( Church details )〕 He then emigrated to India where he was Principal of Bishop’s College, Calcutta〔(Anglican History )〕 from 1883 to 1899; and then the 5th Bishop of Madras,〔The Times, Monday, Feb 13, 1899; pg. 12; Issue 35751; col A ''Ecclesiastical Intelligence New Bishop of Calcutta''〕 an office he held for 23 years.
